ALOPECIA AREATA

Hair loss in round patches, not clear pathogeny, unknown etiology but related to stress situations. Sometimes there can be an autoimmune substrate.

Very often this condition only affects to one area (Alopecia Areata Monolocularis) and it is usually cured spontaneously, but also can spread out everywhere on the head (Alopecia Areata Totalis) or to the whole body (Alopecia Areata Universalis).

It might affect both men and women but it it is more frequent in children and teenagers. However it can begin at any age.

These patches are round small areas on the scalp or beard. The skin itself looks normal and is not inflamed, red, desquamated and has not got any other kind of abnormality –this makes this alopecia different to others. Hair follicles are not destroyed so hair usually grows again, although it is true that relapses or recurrences are very common in patients who have suffered from alopecia areata before, so triggers could start the attack.

According to some studies, dental sources of infection could cause alopecia areata (local hair loss).

Types:

Diffuse alopecia areata/alopecia areata incognita
Alopecia areata monolocularis
Alopecia areata for black hair
Alopecia areata multilocularis
Alopecia totalis
Alopecia universalis

Causes or multifactorial origin

  • Autoimmune mechanism, since an accumulation of CD8 T- lymphocyte is produced around the hair follicle. It makes hair stop developing and it falls out.
  • Psychological origin such as anxiety or stress
  • Genetic predisposition
