MY MEDICAL VISIT

The medical visit is one of the most important things when we have to do a hair treatment or hair surgery.

At the medical centre you will know if you are or not a good candidate for hair transplantation.

At this visit the doctor will evaluate the type, baldness scale and will diagnose alopecia.
Also you will see other cases of patients who have baldness similar to yours.

Please, avoid commercial visits, because they always consider you as a good candidate.

For that you will have a private medical visit where your baldness scale will be evaluated through different studies:

  • Medical history
  • Baldness scale
  • Facial outline
  • Patient´s expectations
  • Trichoscopy (it allows us to see follicular density, hair follicle, scalp, colour, diameter and hair length)

After that visit the patient will have a realistic perception of how he will look once the hair transplantation is done.

The aim of the hair transplantation is to cover alopecic areas where there has been hair loss. Those areas will not respond to pharmacological treatments because they are bald zones. So, in that case hair transplantation will be the best option, if the doctor thinks so.

Before hair transplantation it is important to know some factors:

1st – TYPE AND POSSIBLE CAUSES OF ALOPECIA

The doctor will diagnose the type and possible causes of alopecia.

2nd - SEX

It depends on male or female baldness.

Men pattern baldness is very well located and much more spread out; it presents follicular miniaturization.

Women pattern baldness is more diffuse around her head.

3rd - AGE

The younger the patient is, the less stable the alopecia will be.

For a better hair distribution it is better a patient who has stable alopecia.

4th - ALOPECIA SCALE

Alopecia scale is probably the most important criterion when selecting patients.

Patients who have spread alopecia need to know that maybe it would be needed more interventions to solve the problem.

5th- PATIENT´S EXPECTATIONS

The visit is very important in order to fix real expectations. The less realistic expectation is related to density. Patients having thin hair can´t expect an important density increase.

6th – ALOPECIA EVOLUTION

The patient needs to know that he may need some sessions after all due to a progressive nature of alopecia.

For that, the doctor who diagnoses alopecia will try to stabilize alopecia progression.

7th – DONOR AND RECIPIENT SITES

We will take follicular units from the donor site, more specifically from temporal and occipital sides of donor site.

It would be perfect that the patient has a spread donor site and a smaller recipient site. So we will try to control alopecia with medication in order to restore the whole alopecic area.

Advanced alopecia with average density will be partially restored and future interventions will be needed for a complete restoration.

Stability allows us to be more aggressive with the density of the affected area, since we don´t expect an important progression of that alopecia.

8th – DONOR SITE DENSITY

Hair density is the number of follicular units per cm2. The bigger is donor site, the more follicular units we can transplant. Patients who have density fewer than 60 follicular units per cm2 are not good candidates.

9th - AVERAGE OF FOLLICLE UNITS IMPLANTED

We know that follicular units can have 1, 2, 3, and even 4 hairs. Our aim when extracting is 2,0-2,5 hairs per follicular unit. When the patient hasn´t got the units expected and it is less than 2 hairs per unit, the covering is resisted.

10th – THE HAIR

Race:

Asiatic people usually have 1-hair follicular units. Their hair is very straight and their density is fewer than Caucasians.

Caucasians usually have 2 or 3-hair follicular units and higher density.

Black people (African descendants) usually have curly hair and less follicular density and 1 or 2-hair follicular units. What many people don´t know is that their hair is thinner than the hair of any other race.

Texture:

Thickness is a very important key when we have to carry out hair transplantation.

If hair´s diameter range is less than 40 microns, it is considered as thin hair and will not have good covering.

Hair diameter range for normal thickness is between 50-60 microns.

Over 70 microns it is considered as thick hair.

Hair structure:

It refers to straight or curly hair.

Curly hair needs more follicular units but has better covering.

Straight hair has higher spatial volume.

Hair colour:

Dark hair: there is a higher visual effect when hair colour contrasts with scalp colour. It looks covered up.

Blond or white hair: it also has a good visual effect.
